Dr. Jane Yap

MBBS, MMed - Internal Medicine, FAMS (Respiratory Medicine)

Dr. Yap graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1982 with MBBS (Singapore) and in 1987 with Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine). She was given Merit Bursary for MBBS course, Master of Medicine Fellowship Award for Master of Medicine course in Internal Medicine. She spent one year at Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital (1989-1990) under HMDP (Health Manpower Development Programme) Fellowship Award to pursue a postgraduate respiratory attachment. Upon return, she was awarded FAMS (Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore) 1991, Roll of Specialist in Respiratory Medicine, 1992. She is accreditated to specialise in Respiratory Medicine (1998) and Intensive Care Medicine (2012).

Dr Yap helped formulate in 1997 the STEPS (Singapore Tuberculosis Elimination Programme) after one year as Singapore’s representative in the World Health Organization (WHO) Tuberculosis Surveillance Team (1996-2000) and TB Advisory Committee, Ministry of Health, Singapore (1996).

She was Acting Head (1996-1997) of the Tuberculosis Department at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Consultant (1993-2001) at Respiratory Department of the said hospital prior to private practice. She helped to manage the Occupational Lung Clinic from 1988 – 2001.

While in government service, she was either a member or chairman of various committees (e.g. Medical Intensive Care Unit Planning 1989, Medisave Audit 1993, Continuing Medical Education 1993-1995, Bed Management 1995-1996, Communicable Disease Centre Redevelopment Plan 1995-1996, Infection Control 1996, Medisave and Medical Records 1998-2000.)

She was involved in organising International Conferences such as Asian Pacific Society of Respirology 1992-1993, First Scientific Meeting of the Singapore and Malaysian Thoracic Societies 1991. She was a founding member of the Asthma Association Singapore that was registered in 1993. She was the President of the Association in 1995 and 1999. During these periods, Public Forums, Asthma Family Camps, Asthma Charity Walk-A-Jogs, World Asthma Day were organised. She was also an active committee member of the Singapore Thoracic Society from 1987 – 1995.

At Mount Alvernia Hospital, she was Chairman (2003) of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Prevention Committee, Chairman (2004-2007) of the Hospital Infection Control Committee, Member (2002-2004) of the Continuing Medical Education and Member (2004-2006) of the hospital’s Medical Advisory Board.

Her key research areas were mainly on lung mechanics, bronchial hyperreactivity and tuberculosis. She is the principal author of more than 35 papers published in Local and International Journals and had presented in a number of International Conferences. Articles on COUGH have been published in Hospital newsletters, Motherhood magazine and Mind Your Body in Singapore. She was a clinical tutor for medical students, doctors and nurses while in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. She was actively involved in M.Med Teaching programme both for Internal Medicine, Public Health as well as Family Medicine. In addition to local lectures, she also conducted lessons in London and Indonesia.
